A friend recently sent me an email with a link to a Huffington Post article that described people protesting a recent appeals court decision that disallowed dancing at national monuments. The argument was that monuments are places for solemn reflection, and that dancing distracts from this activity. To protest, a group of people went down to the Jefferson Memorial and had themselves filmed while dancing.
My friend also included in the email a link to an FBI entry on domestic terrorism, outlining something called “The Sovereign Citizen Movement”
According to the FBI, “Sovereign citizens are anti-government extremists who believe that even though they physically reside in this country, they are separate or “sovereign” from the United States. As a result, they believe they don’t have to answer to any government authority, including courts, taxing entities, motor vehicle departments, or law enforcement.” No need to comment on that.
My friend asked me what I thought about all of this. Specifically, she asked me why Obama was doing all of these things and whom I thought was controlling him. I responded with the following.
Personally, I don’t really think this is particular to Obama, he shouldn’t be singled out, nor is this particular to the US. Every government tends to crush its citizens as time goes on, politically, economically, socially. That is how governments work. It happened under Bush, under Clinton, under every president.
The more power the government has the more force it must use to maintain that power. The more force it uses the more people rebel and speak out, so the more the government must repress them. This repression leads to more power in the hand of the government, which starts the process all over again. I think it is an inevitable vicious cycle that goes on regardless of who is in power. There are individuals who are responsible, but at the same time the whole thing is somewhat impersonal.
Also, maybe I am wrong and too gullible, but I don’t really think there is anyone who is controlling Obama. I think a better analogy is to say that he is like a doll being pulled on from all sides by different interests and he can only appease all sides so much at a time. I think you can extend that analogy to government as a whole. Generals and weapons makers want wars and defence spending, bankers and financiers want bank bailouts and protection from collapse, pharmaceutical companies want patents and protection from smaller competition, big agra wants subsidies and tariffs for their industry, etc. Add this to the welfare state, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, which is just another special interest too. These groups can’t go out and take what they want independently so they do it through the allegedly legitimate shield of government activity.
Obama can do one thing to appease everyone and that is give them money. Adding to the national debt in the name of these groups keeps the party going just long enough to keep him in office at the expense of a population that is too ignorant to realize what is going on. There is a dark suspicion on my part but I think the reason you are seeing the appearance of a police state in the US has very much to do with this. As the population realizes its been had, greater measures will have to be taken to keep the sheeple in line, and just circuses will no longer do it. Maybe this is already happening. The government is afraid of its own population, it has, after all, destroyed the peoples’ own livelihood, so it fears revolt. It needs to protect itself.
